It’s spring in Australia, and I love the warmer weather and transition that takes place this time of year. Now is a great time to think about what you can achieve in terms of sprucing up home in time for the summer/holiday season. As we are also probably spending more time at home this Summer, I thought I’d throw out some ideas of key areas of your home, and things you can work on as ‘mini ‘projects’.

Take as little or a lot from the below six common areas of a home. If you live in a small apartment, substitute your guest suite [guest bedroom] for your master bedroom. If you don’t have a pool and sprawling outdoor area, make your apartment balcony a fabulous destination of colour and pattern and a great pit-stop for afternoon drinks.

Here goes!

Outdoor living

  • Ad new outdoor cushions in a blend of patterns. Bright sun kissed yellow and punchy lime greens and aquas are feel good colours for your outdoor fabrics.

  • Create zones, with simple stations [occasional tables are great] for drinks.

  • Add bright complimentary towels for guests to use if near a pool/water to compliment your outdoor fabric choices.

Living Room

  • Try painting a new colour or wallpapering a significant area in grasscloth wallpaper.

  • If your window treatments [curtains/blinds] have seen better days now is the time to replace them.

  • Replace dated lamps with fantastic new ones. Ambient light is always essential in every home.

  • New cushions, incorporating texture & colour.

  • A new rug!

  • Re-style those over stacked or messy tabletops and book cases.

  • Re-organise or incorporate an inspiring new piece of artwork, or a large blown up photograph that is beautifully framed.

Dining Room

  • Paint walls a bold colour or wallpaper them with something dramatic.

  • Add a pair of fabulous table lamps to your buffet.

  • Update your pendant lighting over your dining table to something more dramatic, or install dramatic new pendant lighting over your table.

  • Think about the host chairs at the end of your table. Add new ones or recover and re-invigorate the ones that you have.

  • Purchase a wonderful new dining setting. Add some colour and flavour here!

  • Re-style and play with the centre of your table. Bunches of fresh flowers are always a welcome sight at any dinner or lunch gathering in this area.

Entry Vestibule

  • A rustic console table adorned with an orchid and fresh flowers.

  • A gorgeous new, happy statement piece of art!

  • If you have the room, wallpaper and add a round table & fantastic pendant light.

Guest Suite

  • Revamp your bedding and sleeping pillows. Make sure they are laundered and smelling fresh for when guests arrive.

  • Paint or wallpaper your walls. Take the serene or vibrant approach, but do it well. No skimping on detail and do it to the nines.

  • Is this room comfortable temperature wise for your guests? Install a new fan or split system air conditioner if required. Your guests will thank you for it in Summer.

  • New lamps.

  • A gorgeous occasional chair, with light throw and side table, if you have the room.

  • New styling items. Add a water pitcher and glasses. A fresh bouquet is a wonderful touch. Framed Wi-Fi username & password is a touch that won’t go un-noticed.

Powder Room

  • Fabulous wallpaper! It’s tiny, so go a little out there in this space.

  • New decorative mirror.

  • New taps on vanity cabinet, if they are tired.

  • A new light fixture and painted/wallpapered ceiling. Seriously!
